Clubhouse Vol 28

Like banana bread, sourdough and clapping, The Clubhouse quietly disappeared for a while at some point during the last two years.

Where did it go? Nobody can be sure. When did it stop? It’s impossible to say. But one thing’s for certain: I’ve got a hankering for a cake made from almost-mouldy bananas. And we’re back, baby.

This month we’ve got giants, dragons, and the shortest name we’ve ever coined.

Thanks for waiting. It’s good to be here.

BIG IN IRELAND
Our work on the Giant’s Trail is up for an award

Last year we helped Tandem Design tell the story of Slieve Gullion, with an immersive walkthrough poem set in the Ring of Gullion Area of Natural Beauty in Northern Ireland. We’re chuffed that the project has been shortlisted in the Collaborative Project category of the IDI 2022 Irish Design Awards.

WORDS TO ROUSE DRAGONS
Yma o hyd. Yma o hyd.

We love a motivational speech at Writing Club. We felt ready to win the world cup for Wales after watching Michael Sheen's stirring words to the Welsh football team. It's firey stuff.

(While we're talking motivational speeches, we also enjoyed this more bombastic, metaphor-rich approach from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.)

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION OR ART?
SEO? SE-No.

Product Descriptions sound pretty much the same on every online store you visit. Palace Skateboards are a rare outlier, elevating the humble e-com functional copy into a surrealist art form.

Are they search engine optimised? No. Do they describe what they're selling? Not really. But do we want to see more of this? Yes please.

THE JOY OF FALLING OFF SKATEBOARDS
A letter of recommendation

We're not too cool to admit that we really loved the John Lewis Christmas ad this year.

It reminded us of this lovely letter in the New York Times about why falling off skateboards is a lifelong joy.

INVENTIONS IN SOUND
From closed captions to closer captions

We’ve been meaning to recommend this documentary by poet Raymond Antrobus for ages. It’s all about the poetic possibilities of subtitling – and uses beautiful text-based video to give an insight into the telly watching experience of deaf people.

AND FINALLY, FROM THE WRITING CLUB DESKS...

ITV X
A one letter naming project

Sometimes our word counts run into the thousands. And sometimes it’s a bit less. Like when we named ITV’s new digital home, ITV X. A single letter that says everything it needs to. We’ve been really looking forward to seeing this launch.
